Abstract Beetle #2

Idea: recreate the "perfect" patterns seen in nature, and how they connect to the idea of "total perfection" in human society.

Materials: iPad, Linoleum block, carving tools, screen printing ink

Process: Created design on iPad, then transferred to linoleum block and carved out design, then transfer to paper with screen printing ink

REFLECTION:

I mainly talked about the ideas and how they morphed behind this series in my last page, but there are still a lot of technical aspects of the lino carving that I had to learn about through the process. I had done lino cutting before this series, but less seriously and accompanied with a lot of mistakes! this time around I had some complications with solidifying the design on my linoleum block, I had to block out which parts of the design I wanted to cut so I didn't mistakenly cut through the lines. This piece in particular also deals with a lot of negative space within the patterns, which is something I haven't experimented with in my art before this year. I hadn't realized how much negative space actually played a large role in lino cutting until I had a piece that also relied on parts of the negative space as a serious part of the design, the negative space also creates somewhat of an alternate pattern within the design, creating a flow that is similar to the flow I have seen in plants and animals, so it was important that the negative space was accurate too. This project definitely helped me become more at ease with lino cutting as well, I let up a bit with the pressure I was using with the carving tools and I was able to move along the lines of the piece much easier.

* I will be redoing the prints over break, but the design came out the way it was supposed to. I've already carved away the specs that weren't part of the design too*
